Bus overturns in Sinoville injuring 15 passengers

The driver swerved to the left but lost control which caused the vehicle to overturn.

Fifteen passengers were left injured when a bus overturned on Sefako Makgatho Drive in Sinoville, north of Pretoria on Sunday.

The accident occurred at around 17:15 as the bus’s brakes failed near the Lavender Road intersection.
It was carrying 71 passengers returning from a church service in Cullinan.

Initial reports were that over 80 passengers had been injured, however, this was not the case according to police.

Police spokesperson Captain Johan van Dyk said in an effort to control the bus, the driver swerved to the left but lost control which caused the vehicle to overturn.

He said the incident happened when the bus was on its way to Soshanguve.

“Fortunately, the 15 injured passengers sustained only minor injuries and were promptly treated by medical responders on the scene.

“No fatalities were reported, and the other passengers were unharmed,” said Van Dyk.

Emergency services were dispatched to the scene quickly, and roads in the area were temporarily closed to allow for rescue efforts and the clearance of the overturned bus.

He said the police have since opened a case of reckless and negligent driving as part of the ongoing investigation into the cause of the accident.

“It is alleged that the bus had mechanical issues, particularly with the brakes, which contributed to the loss of control.”

Van Dyk said the investigation will focus on whether proper safety measures and maintenance protocols were followed.
