Almost 370 suspects caught in massive Tshwane police sweep

A major police blitz in Pretoria West and Hercules saw 367 suspects arrested for crimes ranging from murder and rape to drug offences, while 50 undocumented immigrants were also detained.

Police arrested 367 suspects during a recent Operation Shanela in the Hercules and Pretoria West policing districts for various offences.

District detective teams arrested 303 suspects wanted for specific crimes, including one for murder, one for attempted murder, seven for armed robbery, and five for rape.

Police spokesperson Captain Johan van Dyk confirmed that a road block was set up in Pretoria West, which led to the arrest of 50 undocumented immigrants. They are expected to appear in court, and may be deported.

During the operation, 767 individuals and 332 vehicles were searched, with 16 vehicles being tested to prove ownership.

Police conducted patrols at 45 high-crime locations and premises, which led to the arrest of seven people suspected of drug-related crimes.

Officers seized one bag of dagga and 28 sachets containing various illegal substances. Cash was also confiscated, and another person arrested for possession of unlicensed ammunition.

Traffic officers provided crucial support, issuing 275 AARTO infringement notices amounting to over R181 000. Fifteen vehicles were impounded for violating the Road Traffic Act.

As part of liquor compliance inspections, 13 liquor outlets were visited. Six were shut down for non-compliance with the Liquor Act, and alcohol was confiscated.

Major-General Samuel Thine said, “These results show what can be achieved when we work together against crime.”
