Residents urged to confirm housing status on national register

Officials confirm original application documents remain valid, but updating records ensures fair access when housing opportunities arise in chosen areas.

Aaron Maluleka, MMC for Housing and Human Settlements, has urged metro residents who had applied for RDP houses between 1996 and 1999 to update their information on the National Housing Needs Register (NHNR) to ensure they remain eligible for government-subsidised housing.

He confirmed that the original official C-forms (certification forms) and waiting list proof of application documents issued to the first applicants remain valid as proof of registration, including the application number and date.

However, he noted that disparities in older housing systems allowed documents to be duplicated or corrupted, which led to a migration towards the demand database, which had been found to resolve these issues.

“Over the years, some beneficiaries received houses while others did not, either due to backlogs or because applicants no longer qualified as their financial circumstances improved,” Maluleka explained.

He encouraged those whose status has not changed to update their information on the NHNR computerised system used by the government to record households in need of housing assistance.

Maluleka said that when housing opportunities arise in the areas where they applied, including serviced stands, mixed housing, or houses,20% of the 1996–1999 applicants will be considered.

“Eligibility to register on the NHNR includes a total household gross income of R15 000 or less, neither the applicant nor their spouse having ever owned property, South African citizenship or permanent residency, being over 18, and being single, married, widowed, or divorced with dependents,” he said.

Maluleka highlighted that government-subsidised programmes include fully subsidised RDP houses and the Finance-Linked Individual Subsidy Programme (FLISP) houses.

“The City of Tshwane also offers four rental options: community residential units, affordable rental, social housing, and self-sufficient housing for the elderly,” closed Maluleka.

Applicants can register on the NHNR at the Gauteng Department of Human Settlements, Tshwane Region, 1st Floor, Gilboa Building, 50 Hamilton Street in Arcadia, or contact officials at 012 303 3380/3363.
