Police issue safety tips following crime concern
With crime on the rise in Pretoria East, security companies and police are urging residents to remain alert and take extra precautions as the festive season approaches.
The Brooklyn police and private security companies are urging residents and business owners in Pretoria east to stay vigilant, following a concerning rise in crime in recent weeks.
Station commander Colonel Kushie Pietersen shared a set of practical tips for residents to strengthen their home and personal security.
“These include installing sturdy doors and deadbolt locks, securing windows with locks or security film, using outdoor lighting, and avoiding the display of expensive items that may attract criminals.”
Pietersen also advised residents to keep all doors and windows locked, invest in home security systems with alarms and cameras, and avoid hiding spare keys outside.
She also highlighted the importance of trimmed landscaping for clear visibility, being aware of your surroundings, and avoiding walking alone at night.
“Residents are also encouraged to join neighbourhood watch groups or the local CPF for extra protection,” said Pietersen.
Security companies operating in the area have shared safety tips and warned residents to be vigilant.
Brandon Morgan, operations manager at Quatro Security, confirmed that crime has been on the rise.
“We are experiencing an increase in crime in the east, which is why we are warning residents. The festive season usually brings more criminal activity, and people must be more careful than usual,” Morgan said.
He advised residents to keep their valuables out of sight, use ATMs in safe locations, to avoid hitchhiking, and ensure car doors are locked at all times.
Morgan also encouraged families to have emergency plans in place and make use of panic buttons where available.
Gerhard Rossouw, operations manager at CSI Security, reported similar concerns, saying, “During this time of year crime increases, and we are already seeing an uptick.
Rossouw said they are reacting to different types of crime, including violent incidents such as shootings.
He urged residents to test their alarm systems regularly and stressed the importance of community involvement.
“Residents must play their part, whether by reporting suspicious activity, joining neighbourhood watch groups, or simply being alert.”
