New key theft trend hit east malls

Criminals are targeting shoppers by pickpocketing or cloning car keys before stealing vehicles – police urge extra caution.

Police are warning residents in the east to be on high alert after a vehicle was stolen when its keys were pickpocketed at the Willows Crossing shopping centre in Pretoria east earlier this week.

The TMPD Tactical Unit, together with a tracking company, later recovered the vehicle in Nellmapius on October 8 after a community member reported seeing it abandoned in the area.

According to TMPD, the recovery was made possible thanks to the quick action of residents who reported the sighting.

“We thank the community for the tip. Together, we keep Tshwane safe,” the department said in a statement on Facebook.

Following the incident, police have warned of a concerning trend where criminals target motorists while they are still shopping, often by stealing or cloning their keys and later driving off with their vehicles.

Police spokesperson Marinda Austin confirmed that similar cases have been reported in Pretoria east and surrounding areas.

“Police are aware of the cases reported, and it is an ongoing investigation.”

She said hotspots have been identified and police are patrolling the areas daily.

Austin urged motorists to take precautionary measures to protect themselves from such crimes.

She advised motorists to ensure that cars are always locked, with all windows closed, and parked close to security cameras, or in busy areas.

It is also important to put all valuables in your boot or take them with you.

She also warned locals against engaging with strangers who offer unnecessary help in shopping centre parking lots.

“Avoid allowing strangers to assist you unnecessarily, be alert when arriving and leaving, and keep your remote and keys safe at all times,” she said.

Residents are urged to report any suspicious behaviour immediately to SAPS by calling 10111 or their local CPF.
