Metro police impound 13 taxis in the CBD

The TMPD has been cracking down on non-roadworthy taxis in recent weeks as part of the of Road Safety Month campaign.

Continuing their Road Safety Month efforts, the TMPD recently impounded 13 taxis during an operation in Pretoria Central.

The TMPD took to its social media pages after the operation on October 13 to share the results and encourage road users to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy and they are compliant with the rules of the road.

“The TMPD Public Transport Unit conducted a road safety operation in the inner city and surrounding areas, resulting in the impoundment of 13 minibuses in contravention of the National Land Transport Act (NLTA).

“These operations are part of Transport Month initiatives aimed at promoting safe driving behaviour and ensuring the fitness of drivers and vehicles on the road,” the TMPD posted.

The operation follows similar efforts executed last week, when 17 taxis were impounded during a road safety operation in Pretoria West.

TMPD Taxi Unit officers conducted the public transport operation on October 8 on WF Nkomo and Citron streets in Lotus Gardens.

During the operation, the officers impounded 20 Avanza vehicles operating illegally as taxis without valid operating licenses and not being compliant with the NLTA.

October was declared Transport Month in 2005 during the Transport Lekgotla. It is used to raise awareness about the important role of transport in the economy and to encourage participation from civil society and business, including the provision of a safe and more affordable, accessible and reliable transport system.

The National Roads Department says this month will be used to advance the country’s road safety initiatives, while also creating awareness of the economic benefits of the sector.
