Police investigate security officers deadly ambush

Police and colleagues mourn a dedicated tactical officer killed in the line of duty while pursuing suspects during an armed confrontation.

Police are investigating the fatal shooting of CSI Security tactical officer Ulrich Kirsten (36), who was gunned down while responding to an alarm in Newlands on October 10.

Police spokesperson Marinda Austin confirmed that Kirsten was not the intended target of the attack and that one suspect has been arrested.

“The investigation is ongoing,” she said. “We urge community members with any further information to contact police in Brooklyn.”

Austin said the police, together with private security companies, continue to prioritise officer safety through ongoing training, the issuing of protective equipment, and mental support programmes.

“There is close co-operation between security providers and the SAPS to enhance safety and response capabilities,” she added.

Gerhard Rossouw, operations manager at CSI Security, said Kirsten, a former SAPS member and highly respected member of the tactical response team, was fatally wounded during an exchange of gunfire.

He added that one suspect, believed to be a notorious criminal linked to multiple crimes in the east of Pretoria, was apprehended at the scene.

“It is with profound sadness that CSI Security announces the passing of a true hero and family member of CSI, Ulrich Kirsten, a dedicated and decorated tactical reaction officer.”

Rossouw said their control room received a multi-zone alarm activation on Friday morning.

“Ulrich, responding to the call, was ambushed by criminals and fatally shot during a shootout. Supporting units arrived promptly, and one suspect was apprehended while attempting to flee.”

He stated that Kirsten had given his life to secure and save others, and CSI’s hearts, prayers, and thoughts are with his loved ones and family.

Rossouw added that this arrest has been a breakthrough for many victims and communities.

“We will be forever grateful to Ulrich, who gave his everything to apprehend one last suspect. A true hero.”

Kirsten was praised for his passion for safeguarding communities, which was evident in every day he served and protected.

“Ulrich was a true and decorated hero who dedicated his life to serving and protecting communities. As a highly decorated ex-SAPS member, he embodied the values of courage, integrity, and service.

“We mourn the loss of our beloved colleague, Ulrich Kirsten. He was a valued and much-loved member of our tactical team and family.”

Rossouw saluted his bravery and dedication, saying, “May his sacrifice not be in vain, and may we continue to honour his legacy by keeping our communities safe.”
