Mass arrests as Tshwane police launch festive crackdown

More than 450 suspects were arrested in Tshwane during a massive weekend crime blitz as police kicked off festive safety operations across Gauteng.

Police arrested over 450 suspects in Tshwane for various offences this past weekend.

This formed part of the Gauteng Provincial launch of the safer festive season operations, and were led by Lieutenant-General Tommy Mthombeni.

The operations prioritised and focused on areas in combating crime this festive season.

“These priorities included intensifying roadblocks, stop-and-searches, raiding of liquor outlets, patrols at the taxi ranks, bus terminals, train stations, and shopping centres.

It also focused on dealing with the proliferation of firearms and gender based violence (GBV) and femicide,” said provincial police spokesperson, Lieutenant-Colonel Mavela Masondo.

A total of 75 suspects were arrested on October 17 for driving under the influence.

Police arrested 463 suspects for crimes ranging from car hijacking to kidnapping.

The arrested suspects will appear before various Magistrate’s courts from October 20, while others were released after paying admission of guilt fines.
