Community keeps maintaining park
Once forgotten, Alkantrant Park is now a shining example of community pride in Lynnwood Manor.
Lynnwood Manor residents are continuing to maintain the once-neglected Alkantrant Park.
Helen Alpino, deputy chair of the DA Ward 46 branch committee, recently praised the enduring success of the project, saying that the park remains clean.
Alpino collaborated with a local business, the Tshwane Metro, and Ward 46 Councillor Pieter van Heerden.
She said working with these partners went seamlessly, as their vision closely aligned with her own.
“The rejuvenation began in March, when concerned community members raised alarm over the park’s deteriorating state.”

Alpino said that overgrown gardens, fallen trees, and heaps of refuse had turned the area into a dumping ground and potential safety hazard.
She said residents feared it could attract crime and become a refuge for vagrancy, prompting them to seek assistance from local leaders.
Alpino took the lead, making the park’s revival her personal mission.
“Working closely with Van Heerden, Tshwane’s Urban Management is working towards creating greener and cleaner spaces, building a healthier environment for today and for generations to come,” she said.
She added that the parks department and real estate investment trust Attacq Limited helped the team set up the work.
The contributions of Ben Chauke and Robert Riddles from Attacq, and Sonja Hekman and her team from the Urban Forestry Department, were singled out for their vital support in transforming the park.

Through co-ordinated efforts, the once-neglected space has been restored into a clean, safe, and vibrant community park.
“Permanent gardeners have been deployed to ensure ongoing maintenance, with daily litter collection now part of the routine upkeep,” said Alpino.
She said residents are thrilled with the results, praising the collaborative effort that has brought new life to Alkantrand Park.
“This clean-up has been going on for months, and the results speak for themselves,” she said.
Alpino added that with its revitalised landscapes, clear pathways, and secure environment, the park now offers a welcoming space for families, joggers, and the community at large.
“The project stands as a shining example of what local leadership and community engagement can achieve when working together.”
