Rape accused remains in police custody

The victim alleges her neighbour offered to accompany her home, which she agreed to and when they were near her place of residence he dragged her to his place of residence and raped her.

Community outrage continues in Mamelodi as residents, who last week called for the return of the death penalty following the murder of two cousins, are again shocked after a 28-year-old woman was allegedly raped by her neighbour.

The man has since been arrested and will remain in custody as investigations continue.

Mamelodi East police spokesperson Constable Penelope Khulong confirmed a 40-year-old man has been arrested and that police have started investigations.

Khulong said the victim alleged she was coming from a tavern when she noticed someone following her.

She then realised it was her neighbour who offered to accompany her home, which she agreed to.

Khulong said that when they were near her place of residence, she indicated that she would be safe walking home on her own but the suspect forcefully dragged her to his place of residence. He then raped her.

The accused appeared at the Mamelodi Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, where the case was moved to November 11 for further investigations.

Meanwhile, the suspect in Tshiamo and Baleseng Moramaga’s double murder has abandoned his bail bid and remains in police custody after appearing in court.

Tebogo Mnisi (38) is accused of shooting and killing the two young Moramaga cousins and made his first appearance on October 29.

The matter was postponed to January 19 as the investigation needs to be completed before the state is ready to go to trial.

Mnisi is facing five charges: two for premeditated murder, and one each for attempted murder, possession of live ammunition, and possession of an unlicensed firearm.
