Severe storms disrupt services, metro urges patience
Heavy rain and strong winds are hampering electricity, water and waste services across Pretoria, with the metro warning residents to expect delays as unsafe conditions slow repair work.
The Tshwane Metro has warned that persistent heavy rains and strong winds sweeping across the city are placing major strain on essential services, including electricity supply, water provision and waste collection.
Spokesperson Lindela Mashigo said the extreme weather is making it difficult for teams to respond safely and on time.
“The combination of intense rainfall and gusty winds is likely to limit the safe and timely execution of critical operations,” he said.
“We urge communities to exercise patience as we navigate these weather-related challenges.”
Electricity repair work is particularly affected, with the risk of storm-related faults, falling trees, lightning strikes, wind-driven debris and water entering electrical components.
Mashigo emphasised that technicians cannot work on live infrastructure during rain or dangerously high winds due to strict safety protocols.
“This will unfortunately lead to delays in attending to outage calls until conditions are safe enough for work to resume,” said Mashigo.
He added that staff safety remains a priority to the metro.
Water services are also facing disruptions as heavy rainfall floods infrastructure, causes soil movement leading to pipe bursts and raises contamination risks within the network.
“Wind damage to exposed components is contributing to localised interruptions.
Residents may experience low pressure or temporary outages while teams work to stabilise the system, responding only where conditions allow.”
Mashigo added that waste collection is similarly impacted, as trucks struggling to move on waterlogged roads and landfill sites become difficult to access during heavy rainfall.
Residents are warned that delays may occur.
Where this happens, Mashigo said the metro will activate contingency measures, such as rescheduling routes, deploying additional vehicles when weather improves, and prioritising high-volume areas.
He assured residents the city is working continuously to minimise the disruptions.
“The metro remains committed to ensuring that residents receive the best possible service under these challenging weather conditions,” he said.
Residents are urged to report service issues through official channels and to exercise caution on wet roads, near stormwater drains and in low-lying areas.
Further updates will be issued as the situation develops.
