Judge among suspects for alleged attempt to influence High Court ruling
A bribery scandal has rocked the Pretoria High Court as a judge and three others are arrested over millions allegedly paid to secure a favourable ruling.
Four suspects, including a judge and a well-known church leader, are expected in the Pretoria Serious Commercial Crimes Court on Thursday morning after investigators uncovered millions allegedly exchanged to influence a High Court decision.
The suspects were arrested last night (November 25) and are facing charges of corruption and money laundering.
Spokesperson for the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (the Hawks / DPCI), Colonel Katlego Mogale, said the arrests follow allegations that a presiding judge received a bribe.
“It is alleged that [the judge] received gratification in exchange for delivering a favourable judgment in a high-profile succession dispute currently before the Pretoria High Court,” Mogale explained.
He said the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation team, based at the head office, apprehended the suspects, aged between 32 and 64, during a takedown operation.
“The matter stems from serious allegations of attempts to improperly influence the civil case involving the well-known church.”
Mogale said a prosecution-led investigation has revealed a money trail amounting to millions of rands that allegedly exchanged hands among the accused.
“Investigators also uncovered the involvement of three additional suspects in the alleged corruption and money laundering scheme, leading to warrants of arrest being issued,” he added.
Acting national head of the Hawks, Lieutenant-General Siphosihle Nkosi, welcomed the arrests and praised the joint efforts of the Hawks and the National Prosecuting Authority.
“These arrests demonstrate the DPCI’s unwavering commitment to tackling corruption at all levels. The meticulous work by the Serious Corruption Investigation team, supported by our partners in the National Prosecuting Authority, reflects the strength of our collective resolve. We will continue to pursue all those who abuse positions of trust and undermine the rule of law,” said Nkosi.
