Police have reported that a Toyota vehicle stolen in Pretoria Central was retrieved on November 30, before it could be smuggled out of the country.

Two suspects, a 38-year-old man from Zimbabwe and a 43-year-old Malawian national, were arrested for possession of a suspected stolen motor vehicle as they tried to flee law enforcement.

Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said the SAPS Limpopo Tracking Team, joined by several private security firms, and Tracker SA were involved in an anti-smuggling operation.

According to Ledwaba, the teams received intelligence about a stolen motor vehicle travelling from Gauteng to Beitbridge on the N1.

“The ever-alert operational team kept observation and [a] vehicle fitting the description [of the stolen vehicle] was spotted on the N1 North Polokwane next to the Mall of the North,” Ledwaba said.

He said the operational team then stopped the vehicle.

“Preliminary investigations revealed that the vehicle was stolen in Pretoria Central.”

Ledwaba said the two occupants were both adult men.

“A case of possession of a suspected stolen motor vehicle was opened in Polokwane, and the suspects will appear before Polokwane Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, December 2.”

He said the recovered vehicle is a Toyota Corolla Cross GR valued at R600 000.

The provincial commissioner of police in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, has praised the teams for their swift response, which led to the interception of the reported stolen vehicle and the subsequent arrest.
