Over 28km of piping installed in Winterveldt

Following an oversight visit, the Tshwane metro confirmed the project is running ahead of schedule. This has raised hopes that long-awaited water and sanitation upgrades will be delivered well before the 2028 completion date. This is despite ongoing relocation challenges.

The Tshwane metro’s Human Settlements Department has reported major progress in the Winterveldt Water and Sewer Reticulation Project, with more than 28km of piping already installed as efforts to upgrade essential services continue to gain momentum.

The update follows an oversight visit by MMC for Human Settlements, Alderman Aaron Maluleka, who assessed the current state of the project and confirmed that it remains ahead of schedule.

The large-scale infrastructure initiative, which officially began on November 21, 2024, is now almost half complete.

According to Maluleka, the contractor is performing exceptionally well, advancing well ahead of the planned project schedule.

This speedy progress has allowed the metro to record significant milestones within the first year of implementation.

Maluleka said, to date, the project has seen the installation of just under 12km of water pipelines and just over 16km of sewer pipelines across Winterveldt, a combined total of over 28km.

These installations, Maluleka said, form part of a broader effort to overhaul the area’s ageing and inadequate service infrastructure, which has long affected the quality of life for residents.

“In addition to the piping installations, the construction of sanitation facilities is progressing well.

“A total of 809 toilets have been built, with 794 already completed up to roof level,” he said.

The metro has also begun installing services to 1 274 stands, work that is also moving faster than initially projected.

The project is currently set for completion in March 2028, but Maluleka hinted at the possibility of earlier delivery if the pace of work continues and challenges are managed effectively.

However, despite the encouraging progress, the project has not been without obstacles.

The MMC confirmed that the team continues to encounter obstructions and encroachments along the construction route.

These include informal structures and settlements located on critical service lines, which require relocation before work can continue.

The relocation process for more than 400 affected households is presently at an advanced stage, representing one of the most sensitive and time-consuming components of the project.

Maluleka emphasised that resolving these encumbrances remains key to keeping the project on track for early completion.

“We understand the inconvenience caused during major infrastructure upgrades, but these short-term disruptions pave the way for long-term improvements in service delivery and quality of life.

“We appreciate the community’s co-operation as we accelerate progress in Winterveldt.”

He said the department expressed continued confidence in delivering the full installation of water and sewer services to the 1 274 erfs well before the planned completion date.

With visible progress on the ground, the project is poised to bring lasting improvements to the Winterveldt community, offering residents a future marked by improved sanitation, reliable water supply, and better living conditions.
