Festive season crime alerts issued for Mamelodi

Authorities are warning residents to protect their valuables, avoid late-night travel and stay vigilant as criminals are taking advantage of increased celebrations and crowds.

Mamelodi East and West police would like to remind the public of certain crime trends they need to be wary of during the festive season.

There are many events taking place during the festive season, and criminals turn to target unsuspecting people who are in the mood to celebrate, especially at shopping malls.

Police spokesperson Constable Penelope Khulong said the public needs to be cautious about online purchasing safety.

Khulong said to be cautious about sharing personal information, such as identity cards or banking details. You should also always check the credibility of online shopping sites. If a deal looks too good to be true, it probably is.

Ensure that data transfer is appropriately protected. Avoid shopping on sites that do not use full authentication.

When at an ATM, be cautious of your surroundings. If you need assistance, rather approach security personnel or walk into a bank branch.

Community members are also urged not to share details regarding dates, times or locations of the days when they will be withdrawing money for their stokvels or social club money.

Put all valuable items in the boot of the car and make sure the car is locked. Valuable things like laptops, cellphones and groceries tempt criminals.

Avoid travelling late at night, and always be aware of your surroundings, especially when stopping at intersections.

Avoid parking outside yards for a long time when picking someone up. Rather drive into their yard and park.

Always inform someone close to you when taking Uber/Bolt rides to any location.

Parents should take extra care of children during this period. Never leave children with strangers or unattended.

Buying groceries in bulk all at once makes you more vulnerable to robberies.

Khulong said the police would like to wish everyone to celebrate the festive season safely.

The public is encouraged to report any suspicious-looking person to the police by dialling 08600 10 111.
