Mamelodi robbery and kidnapping suspect remains in police custody

A man accused of a brutal robbery and kidnapping involving a family in Mamelodi has been held in custody as police search for two other suspects.

A 30-year-old man suspected of murder, kidnapping, and armed robbery appeared in the Mamelodi Magistrate’s Court on January 7.

Senior advocate Anne-Marie Bendeman said, “The accused will remain in police custody, and the case is remanded for further investigation on January 14.”

According to the police, the suspect was arrested on December 27 in the Marry Me informal settlement in Mamelodi East, following a tip-off.

He, together with two other suspects, is suspected of the robbery and kidnapping of a family of three in Mamelodi East on December 12.
The man is also suspected of murder and robbery in another case.

According to police, the other suspects are still on the run.

The victim states that he was at home watching TV when he heard his gate being opened. His door was closed but not locked, and three suspects entered the shack and held him at gunpoint, demanding to see his father.

He replied that his father was not there. The suspects then assaulted him, stating that they could see the father’s vehicle in the yard.

The victim replied that his father and mother lived on the same street as him, but not in the same yard.

Police said the victim was then dragged to his parents’ home, and the suspects forced their way into the house after firing one shot.

They demanded the vehicle keys, then kidnapped the victim, his father, and his mother.

“His father was put in the boot of the car, [the] mother was in the back seat, [and] they drove from Amanda Park to Lusaka,” said police.

Near the railway line in the Lusaka area, the father managed to escape.

However, the suspects stopped the vehicle, shot the father in the leg, and went back to the vehicle, where they forced the mother and son out of the vehicle before speeding off.

Police are asking anyone with information that could lead to the arrest of the two suspects still on the run to please come forward.
