Three schools undergo safety inspections in back-to-school campaign
Metro officials inspected safety, sanitation and management issues while addressing urgent infrastructure needs and learner placement backlogs.
As part of the Andries Tatane Back-to-School campaign, metro officials visited three schools to ensure that school safety and functionality are maintained.
MMC for Health Tshegofatso Mashabela and MMC for Environment Obakeng Ramabodu recently paid visits to Danville High School, David-Hellen Peta Secondary School and Laerskool Oost Eind.
They also went around to the Department of Education Satellite District in Region 3, where, reportedly, over 400 children still wait to find spaces.
At Laerskool Oost Eind, the officials oversaw the handover of the contractor tasked with building the school’s toilet facilities, an intervention that Ramabodu said is both urgent and necessary.
“Proper sanitation is not a luxury –it is a basic requirement for learning, health, and dignity. No child should be expected to focus in class while basic hygiene needs are compromised, and no educator should work under conditions that undermine safety and well-being,” Ramabodu said.
According to Ramabodu, by addressing dysfunctional toilets, they are protecting learners’ health, restoring dignity, and supporting an environment that is conducive to teaching and learning.

At Danville High, Mashabela said officials met with school management to address reported management issues.
The school was operational on Wednesday, despite ongoing management challenges.
Mashabela said they met with the school principal to discuss the challenges currently affecting the institution.
“We will continue to work closely with the school management to ensure stability, accountability, and the uninterrupted functioning of the school in the best interests of learners and educators.”
She continued, saying that no school should suffer because of problems with management, and that the education of learners must always be put first.
A clean-up was held during the visit to David-Hellen Peta Secondary School on Masupye Street in Atteridgeville.
Mashabela said the school faces socio-economic challenges related to crime, drug use, and non-compliant vendors.
She stated that a by-law compliance inspection will take place to ensure that food preparation areas are up to standard, so that no cases of food poisoning occur.
“This intervention is aimed at restoring cleanliness, dignity, and a safe learning environment for learners and educators. We met with the school management and will continue to work closely with the school to address challenges,” Mashabela added.
