By-law enforcement descends on Moot businesses

Metro officials asserted that lawlessness will not be tolerated as TMPD enforced by-laws and reclaimed hijacked properties.

The TMPD By-Laws Specialised Unit recently executed targeted operations with partner organisations in Rietfontein to ensure that informal and formal businesses in the area are adhering to the by-laws.

The operation saw several infringement notices being issued to various businesses at the Jacaranda Centre.

In a post on their social media pages, the TMPD stated that their efforts are to ensure community safety will not be compromised.

The TMPD inspected several businesses, finding that five businesses were not following the Business Act. They also report eight cases where the Foodstuffs, Cosmetics and Disinfectants Act was not being followed.

A petrol station, which reportedly owed the city more than R1.2-million, also had its services disconnected during the operation.

In a simultaneous Bad Buildings Committee operation, conducted by TMPD members and other role players, three Section 56 notices were issued, and one business was served with a prohibition notice and closed immediately.

MMC for Corporate and Shared Services, and the Chairperson of the Bad Buildings Mayoral Sub-committee, Kholofelo Morodi, had expressed her discontent with illegal structures erected on hijacked properties during the operation.

“I undertook an oversight visit to Lotus Gardens to check some of our sites that have been hijacked. Numerous sites now have illegal structures on them, all of which were erected in the past years. The city will be reclaiming its property back, leaving no room for lawlessness,” Morodi said.
