Three undocumented suspects nabbed for copper cables possession

Officers noticed a suspicious vehicle parked next to a scrapyard and proceeded to investigate, only to find copper cables inside. The three occupants also did not have valid identification documents.

The Tshwane metro police arrested three undocumented foreign nationals for possession of suspected stolen copper cables and contravention of the Immigration Act in Silverton.

The arrests were carried out by the TMPD Cable Theft Unit on January 24, during a routine patrol aimed at combating infrastructure-related crimes.

According to TMPD spokesperson Isaac Mahamba, officers noticed a suspicious silver VW Polo Classic with three occupants parked next to a scrapyard.

“Upon searching the vehicle, copper cables were discovered inside,” Mahamba said.

Mahamba stated that the suspects failed to provide a credible explanation for having the copper, leading officers to believe the material was stolen.

“Further checks revealed that all three occupants were undocumented foreign nationals, resulting in additional charges under the Immigration Act.”

The arrests form part of TMPD’s intensified efforts to curb cable theft, which continues to negatively affect service delivery and critical infrastructure across Pretoria.

Mahamba said the suspects were detained at a local police station and are expected to appear in court soon.

TMPD has urged members of the public to report suspicious activities, particularly around infrastructure sites, as law enforcement continues its fight against cable theft and related crimes.
