Legal action looms after Sundowns fan incident
The club says it will not tolerate intimidation or illegal behaviour from supporters following an alleged incident involving its technical team after the Al-Hilal draw.
Mamelodi Sundowns have announced plans to take legal or disciplinary action against supporters accused of harassing a member of the club’s technical team following their CAF Champions League match against Al-Hilal at Loftus Versfeld on January 23.
The club released a statement on January 27 condemning the conduct of what it described as a few ill-disciplined supporters who disrupted members of the Sundowns technical team as they were leaving the stadium after the match.

The statement follows a widely circulated video on social media in which Brazilian sporting director Flemming Berg is seen being splashed with water.

While the club reiterated that it has always encouraged active supporter participation and engagement, it stressed that such involvement must be exercised with respect and courtesy.
“Mamelodi Sundowns will not tolerate any threats, illegal behaviour or intimidation by any of its supporters or fans at any of its matches,” the statement read.
It added that appropriate legal or disciplinary proceedings will be initiated against those whose conduct is found to be illegal or contrary to the policies or rules of the Sundowns supporters.
“The players and technical team of Mamelodi Sundowns are focusing on retaining the league title and successfully competing in all cup competitions. This can only be achieved with the support and encouragement of the Mamelodi Sundowns supporters,” the club added.
The incident comes after a 2–2 draw between Sundowns and Al-Hilal in their CAF Champions League group-stage clash on Friday night.
The hosts began on the front foot, with Nuno Santos finding pockets of space early on.
His initial delivery into the box was too powerful for Khuliso Mudau to connect with, while a later effort from Santos was blocked by the Al-Hilal goalkeeper.
Despite Masandawana’s early pressure, the visitors took the lead in the 15th minute, after the home side failed to deal with a loose ball at the back, allowing an unmarked Al-Hilal player to drive into the area and slot the ball into the net.
The Brazilians responded seven minutes later when Arthur Sales levelled matters, finishing calmly after Santos delivered the ball into the danger area.
The remainder of the first half was fiercely contested, but neither side could find another breakthrough, sending both teams into the interval locked at 1–1.
The Pretoria giants continued to push after the break, with Brayan León – making his CAF Champions League debut – supplying a dangerous ball into the box for Thato Sibiya, whose clever flick was denied by the goalkeeper.
The breakthrough for the hosts arrived in the 64th minute when Teboho Mokoena unleashed one of his trademark long-range strikes following a corner, putting Sundowns ahead.
However, the advantage was short-lived, as Al-Hilal equalised soon afterwards, with a rebound finding the net despite an initial clearance by Grant Kekana.
What followed was a scrappy and physical closing spell marked by several bookings but no further goals, as both sides were forced to settle for a share of the points despite searching for a late winner.
Sundowns’ line-up: Williams, Mudau, Cupido, Kekana, Sibiya, Mokoena, Santos, Allende, Sales, Mothiba, Matthews.
Substitutes: Onyango, Morena, Johannes, Basadien, Adams, Mkhulise, Letlhaku, Reisinho, León.
