Ongoing by-law operations aim to curb lawlessness in city
Enforcement teams inspected formal and informal businesses, issuing fines, closing outlets and confiscating hazardous goods in multiple areas.
The TMPD By-law Specialised Unit conducted enforcement operations in several areas across the metro, including Atteridgeville, Pretoria West, Montana, and Soshanguve.
The operation on January 25 targeted formal and informal businesses operating in contravention of the Business Act, as well as activities linked to illegal dumping.
During the operation, a total of 23 business premises were inspected.
“Authorities issued 23 Section 56 notices for violations related to the Business Act and illegal dumping. The operation forms part of ongoing efforts to promote lawful business practices, environmental cleanliness, and public safety across the metro,” TMPD said in a social media post.
The by-law enforcement operations follow a similar effort executed earlier in the same week. On January 20, the same unit, in collaboration with other organisations, executed operations at the Jacaranda Centre. The focus was on both formal and informal businesses to enforce compliance.
The team inspected several business premises, identifying five contraventions of the Business Act and issuing five notices.
Additionally, four Section 56 notices were issued for violations of the Foodstuffs, Cosmetics and Disinfectants Act, along with four further contravention notices under the same act.
A simultaneous Bad Buildings operation, conducted by TMPD members and other role players, resulted in three Section 56 notices being issued and one prohibition notice, resulting in the immediate closure of a business.
Another operation was carried out in Sunnyside, Mamelodi, Mabopane, Ga-Rankuwa, and Pretoria Central on January 21.
During those operations, various businesses were inspected for compliance, leading to the confiscation of numerous hazardous products and the closure of a food outlet in Sunnyside due to health hazards.
In Mabopane, TMPD regional policing officers arrested eight undocumented immigrants for being in contravention of the Immigration Act.
The metro police said ongoing strategic operations by the department are to curb lawlessness and to maintain a safe and healthy environment in the metro.
