Accelerated build programme aims to open Lusaka Clinic before year-end
The metro says employment opportunities for local residents have begun as the contractor advances work on the new healthcare facility.
Following an oversight visit, the Tshwane Metro Health Department has confirmed steady progress at the Lusaka Clinic construction site in Mamelodi East.
The oversight visit by the Mayor, Dr Nasiphi Moya, and MMC for Health, Tshegofatso Mashabela, on February 3 follows the handover of the site to the appointed contractor, Bafihleli Business Enterprise.
While the contractual completion period for the project is three years, the contractor has committed to an accelerated programme of delivery and has undertaken to complete the clinic within 13 months. It is hoped that the new clinic will open in the middle of December.
MMC for Health Tshegofatso Mashabela said in a statement that since the handover, the project has moved from inactivity to active construction.
Mashabela said work undertaken to date includes site establishment, electrical installations for lights and plug wiring, extensive site clearance and cleaning, clearing of the attenuation pond, exposing of existing services, and the start of building works.
The project is already beginning to deliver economic benefit to the surrounding community, as six community members are currently employed on site, with a total of 18 employment opportunities expected to be created over the duration of the project to benefit residents.
She said once completed, the Lusaka Clinic will provide 21 consultation rooms and significantly expand access to primary healthcare services for the growing population of Mamelodi Ext 22, Ward 10, and surrounding areas.
“The facility will play an important role in reducing pressure on existing clinics and improving access to quality healthcare for communities that have waited for this development for many years,” she said.
She added that this administration has prioritised stabilisation, close political oversight, and transparent reporting to ensure delivery.
Tshwane metro will continue to monitor construction closely and provide regular updates as the project advances, to ensure that Lusaka Clinic is completed responsibly, on schedule, and in the best interests of the communities it is intended to serve.
