Metro police academy under scrutiny after favouritism claims
The committee promises to monitor recruitment processes diligently following growing concerns.
During a recent site visit to the TMPD Training Academy in Pretoria West, the Section 79 Committee assured residents that it will continue to uphold ethical recruitment processes.
In May last year, Tshwane Mayor, Dr Nasiphi Moya, announced 200 trainee spots available to join the TMPD.
Since then, the recruitment process of the metro police has come under scrutiny, with claims of corruption and favouritism being used to determine who gets placed.
Most notably in January earlier this year, a 22-year-old woman was arrested in the north of Pretoria following an alleged attempt to bribe a senior TMPD official R10 000 in connection with the municipality’s recruitment process.
The inspection was a result of a presentation on the 200 trainees being tabled before the Oversight Committee on January 20, where the committee resolved that an inspection of the academy was necessary to have a better understanding of the content of the report.
During the inspection, the committee received and acknowledged various challenges and complaints raised regarding the recruitment process.
Chairperson Neo Mocumi emphasised that transparency, fairness, and accountability remain central to the committee’s mandate.
“We are mindful of the concerns expressed by stakeholders and the community. The Oversight Committee will continue to monitor the process closely to ensure that the integrity of recruitment is upheld and that the academy delivers competent officers who will serve Tshwane with professionalism and dedication,” Mocumi said.
During the inspection, the committee reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening community safety through oversight and ensuring that recruitment processes align with both legislative requirements and community expectations.
The Oversight Committee will provide further updates as monitoring continues and corrective measures are implemented where necessary.
