From picnic to party: Somerfees turns up the volume

The third instalment of Somerfees drew a full house at Mainland, bringing families together for music, sunshine and good vibes.

Locals put on their dancing shoes as the Somerfees (summer festival) took over the beautiful Mainland venue in Menlyn on Saturday, February 28.

Hosted by sisters Marushké and Valeska Nel, the much-loved event returned for its third – and biggest yet – edition.

For the first time, Somerfees was completely sold out, a milestone the organisers attribute to both the growing support from the community and the charm of the Menlyn venue.

“Our goal has always been to bring families together for a fun day in Pretoria with great music and drinks,” said Valeska.

“To see it sold out and full of happy faces really means everything to us.”

The atmosphere was electric, with families, friends and music lovers filling the venue from early afternoon.

Picnic blankets, cold drinks and dancing crowds created the perfect summer scene.

Attendee Dannielle de Bruyn described the event as “the perfect Pretoria day out”.

“It’s so nice to have something like this in our city where you can just relax, enjoy good music and spend time with friends,” she said.

Alexa Erasmus agreed, saying the event exceeded her expectations.

“The vibe is incredible. It feels safe, organised and just genuinely fun. I’ll definitely be back next year.”

With the success of this year’s festival, the Nel sisters confirmed they plan to return to Mainland in 2027.

“We love the venue and the community here in Pretoria,” said Marushké.

“This city shows up for us, and we can’t wait to make Somerfees even bigger next year.”

If this year’s sold-out celebration is anything to go by, Somerfees has firmly cemented itself as a highlight on Pretoria’s social calendar.
