Mamelodi youth kick bullying to the curb
Sport and unity took centre stage as Mamelodi learners used Youth Day to tackle bullying head-on.
In a bid to combat bullying, a Mamelodi organisation marked Youth Day with a soccer tournament and fun day at Uoane Primary School.
Tshepo Ramoncha from Tsalanang NPO said the event was aimed at promoting youth development, healthy lifestyles, teamwork, and positive relationships between learners and educators.
Ramoncha said the day began with an exciting Fun Run, which encouraged physical fitness, participation, and community spirit among young people.
The Fun Run set a positive tone for the day’s activities and demonstrated the importance of sport and recreation in building healthy communities.
Uoane Primary School walked away with the floating trophy after beating Emthunzini Primary School in the tournament.
Ramoncha said though the event faced some challenges, it was ultimately a success.
“The mission of the tournament was to create and strengthen good relationships between learners and educators through sport and recreation.”
Two schools withdrew at the last minute without proper preparation.
The learners displayed outstanding sportsmanship, discipline, determination, and teamwork throughout the day.
The event created opportunities for young people to interact, learn, compete, and build friendships in a safe and positive environment.
He added that the trophy represents the spirit and legacy of Youth Day.
Tsalanang NPO intends to make this tournament an annual event that honours the sacrifices of South Africa’s youth while promoting unity, education, leadership, and community development through sport.
Lucas Rabi from Lucas Athletics Development said the tournament was a success and every participant had fun.
Rabi said the children from the age of nine years upwards took part in the fun walk.
“We are happy to have events like these in our communities, because it assists our children to have positive minds and stick to sports.
“The most important thing is we are building champions in our own townships. This is one of the greatest events to see happening in our community as children participated in different sports codes.
“We are planning to host a bigger tournament next. We are pleading with other local schools to start participating in school sports tournaments,” said Mohla Bosoga from Uoane Primary School.
Ramoncha added that the partnership between Tsalanang NPO, Lucas Athletics, and Innovation Outreach made a significant impact on the lives of the participants and demonstrated the power of collaboration in creating opportunities for young people.
“We were able to inspire learners to dream bigger, stay active, and become positive contributors to their communities.”
