Safer Schools drive targets bullying and vaping
The school handed over 11 vaping devices confiscated from learners, who are facing disciplinary processes.
Pretoria North police visited Laerskool Voortrekker Eeufees on September 1 to address bullying and substance abuse and promote safer learning environments.
Social Crime Prevention co-ordinator Sergeant Tumisang Moloto visited the school as part of the SAPS Safer Schools Programme. The programme aims to address social issues affecting learners and raise awareness of the consequences of risky and harmful behaviour.
After the assembly, police officers engaged directly with grades 6 and 7 learners in their respective classrooms.
Learners were sensitised to the impact and consequences of bullying and substance abuse. Police also encouraged them to make responsible decisions and understand how their choices could affect themselves and others.
Police spokesperson Captain Johan van Dyk said a significant development during the visit was the handover of 11 vaping devices confiscated from learners by the school’s Disciplinary Committee.
Disciplinary processes have since been instituted against the learners who were found in possession of the vaping devices.
Van Dyk said the confiscation highlights the importance of co-operation between schools, parents, learners and law enforcement in identifying and addressing behaviour that could negatively affect the school environment.
He said police would continue supporting schools through preventative interventions.
“Through initiatives such as the Safer Schools Programme, we aim to educate learners about the consequences of bullying and substance abuse while encouraging them to make responsible choices,” he said.
He added that creating a safe school environment requires ongoing co-operation between law enforcement and educational institutions.
Growing concerns around the presence of vaping devices among school learners and the need for schools to enforce disciplinary measures.
The Safer Schools Programme will continue to serve as a platform for SAPS to engage with learners and educators on issues affecting safety, discipline and well-being within schools.
