I am struggling to come to grips with the metro’s short-sighted water restriction with regard to swimming pools.

The decree is that swimming pools may not be filled with municipal water.

Do our smug decision makers realise that a swimming pool actually dies when its water level is not maintained.

The pool filter and automatic cleaner do not function properly when the water level is too low – which means that your swimming pool becomes a stinking cesspool within weeks.

Think for a moment how many suburban homes have swimming pools in our hot Pretoria.

Think of the unhealthy consequences of all those pools becoming spots of dead and dirty water.

Rather give home owners the option of using less water in the garden for the sake of keeping their swimming pools alive.

Or charge them extra.

Merely issuing a blunt ban is not the conduct of intelligent leaders.
