OPINION: Faith-filled words carry power
Words have power, much more than you might think or realize, but at times we speak them as if they are meaningless.
If you want to see the power of God manifest in your life, you surely have to pay more attention to what you’re saying.
Words have power much more than you might think or realise, but at times we speak them as if they are meaningless. At school, we used to say “sticks and stones may break my bones, but words can never hurt me”. Now that’s a very big lie. Words have encouraged people and words have destroyed lives; even driven people to suicide.
Jesus says in Matthew 12:36+37 (AMP): “But I tell you, on the day of judgment men will have to give account for every idle (inoperative, non-working) word they speak. For by your words you will be justified and acquitted, and by your words, you will be condemned and sentenced.”
Idle words are words you speak that you actually don’t believe. Words like “I’m dying to see you.” You don’t really mean you’re busy dying or are going to die, but you say it anyway to emphasise the importance of the relationship. There is a problem because Proverbs 18:21 (AMP) says: “Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and they who indulge in it shall eat the fruit of it (for death or life).”
So, every time you say things you don’t mean, it will begin to numb your heart. Unconsciously every word is making your heart a little harder; to believe what you actually say will come to pass when you really need it to come to pass. Jesus illustrates what the words of power really could do in Mark 11:13+14. Jesus found no fruit on the fig tree and He said to it “No one ever again shall eat fruit from you.”
The next morning when they (His disciples) were passing along they notice that the fig tree was withered. The disciples were shocked. Then Jesus went on to explain that this wasn’t limited to the fig tree. It could also apply to other things. Jesus then taught them (His disciples) to speak to their mountains. We tend to speak to God about our mountains instead of speaking to our mountains.
Our words must be faith-filled words. God’s word is “Spirit and life” and we can speak His word into every situation and because His word has life-giving power, we can eat the fruit of those life-giving words.
My challenge to you is to change the way you speak and you’ll experience life.
