One of South Africa’s most promising young female canoeists, Esti van Tonder from Pretoria recently received the support of SASCOC with her first OPEX (Operation Excellence) contract as a reward for her many notable performances over the past year.
This development confirms that Esti is firmly fixed on SASCOC’s radar as a future Olympic medallist and it will enable her to prepare unhindered for the Olympic Games in 2016.
Canoeing can take great pride in being one of a handful of Olympic disciplines to receive the backing of SASCOC towards Rio (2016) and beyond.
Van Tonder trains at the Academy of Canoe Development, which is based at Roodeplaat Dam where she is also actively involved in coaching young sprinters.
She is one of South Africa’s top female sprinters with international competition experience. Her most recent achievement was a fifth place at the World Championships in Ontario during August.
She can therefore already claim to be counted among the top five female canoeists in her age group in the world.
