The Gauteng Elite Open Boxing Championships took place at the Transnet Engineering boxing gymnasium in Koedoespoort recently.
Elite boxers aged between 19 and 40 years, and officials from Johannesburg, Ekurhuleni, Gauteng West, Gauteng North and Sedibeng took part in the tournament.
On the first day, the preliminary rounds and semi-finals were contended in several weight categories and the next day the finals took place.
Spectators were treated to very good boxing and emotions ran high during the finals as the winners were automatically selected to represent Gauteng at the coming South African National Amateur Boxing Association’s (Sanabo’s) Elite Championships in East London in July.
The Johannesburg team came first with the most gold medals, followed closely by Gauteng West and Gauteng North.
The best boxer of the championships, Lucky Sibanda, came from Gauteng North. In total four of the Gauteng North boxers were selected as members of the Gauteng team for the Sanabo Elite Championships. They are Lucky Sibanda, Jabulani Makhense, Sifiso Hlongwane and Nyiko Ndukula.
Several registered open boxing clubs are active in Gauteng North and men, women, boys and girls of all ages are welcome to join them.
