Ride with a purpose in the Sungardens Carousel Classic
It's time again for one of Pretoria's most famous cycling races, the Sungardens Carousel Classic, that will take place on Women's Day this Saturday.
The 2014 Sungardens Carousel Classic will take place on National Women’s Day, 9 August, at the Carousel.
This year will be the 15th consecutive year that the Carousel will present the event and organisers are urging cyclists of all fitness levels to join this year’s race and help break the moneyraising record.
Traditionally, the Sungardens Carousel Classic draws between 1 500 and 2 000 entries. This year, a full field of cyclists is hoped for.
“Get your cleats on and get ready to ride for an excellent cause. All proceeds will go to the Sungardens and Mamelodi hospices, which do amazing work, caring for people affected by terminal diseases. The hospices rely heavily on the donations and support they receive from the public and the money raised at our annual cycle race certainly helps to alleviate some of the challenges they face in providing their invaluable care and support services.
“We’re hoping that we raise more than we did in 2013. By entering the race or by making a donation, our community can help us get there,” says Andrea Blanchard, promotions manager at The Carousel.
The 2014 event will comprise the usual 110km and 70km road races, a 10km fun ride, and a free 1km kiddies race – so there’s a race for all ages and fitness levels. Tandems are also welcome.
Entries are open. People keen to ride with a purpose can enter online on www.championchip.co.za or through the race organiser, the Reserve Bank Cycling Club. For information, contact Anton Dewinnaar at the Reserve Bank Cycling Club on 012-313-3915 or anton.dewinnaar@resbank.co.za.
– Race numbers can be collected from Bruce Reynecke Cycles in Lynnwood Road, Lynnwood, Pretoria on Thursday 7 August from 09:00 to 16:00. Prospective participants can also enroll on the day of the race at the Carousel from 05:00.
