Sports highlights 3-8 April
There are plenty of sports events to look forward to for those who have nothing else to do during the long Easter weekend.
Although cricket purists will probably follow the Indian Premier League (IPL) over the next six weeks, the cricket season is over for now for South Africans. However, there is still some sports action to look forward to during the winter months, and especially during the upcoming Easter weekend.
Rugby
Although there will be much action in schools rugby tournaments across the country this weekend, the rugby public’s attention will probably be focused on the Community Cup and SupeRugby action.
The Cell C Community Cup Easter playoffs looks set for a thrilling start in Rustenburg on Thursday (2 April) as the top eight non-university club teams in the country go head-to-head at the Impala Rugby Club for the historic Gold Cup.
Hamiltons, Wesbank, Durbanville-Bellville, Jonsson College Rovers, GAP Management Despatch, Vaseline Wanderers, Pretoria Police, and hosts and defending champions Rustenburg Impala will battle it out for the title.
The tournament, which will be broadcast live on SuperSport, will run over three days, with four matches played per day on Thursday (2 April), Saturday (4 April) and Monday (6 April) respectively.
Pretoria Police’s first game is on 2 April at 16:00 against Rustenburg Impala.
While the Stormers (Friday 08:30) and Cheetahs (Saturday 10:40) will play against the Hurricanes and the Brumbies respectively this weekend, rugby supporters can also look forward to two SupeRugby matches on home soil this weekend.
At 15:00 Saturday afternoon the Sharks tackle the Crusaders in Durban.
Then the Gauteng derby starts at 17:05 when the Bulls cross the Jukskei River to take on the Lions at Ellis Park.
Athletics
Although there will be plenty of opportunity for road athletes to take part in Pretoria races this weekend, the most serious runners will probably be in Cape Town for the Two Oceans ultra marathon. These days there is also an option for athletes to participate in a half marathon at the Two Oceans, which will definitely attract more athletes to Cape Town this Easter weekend.
For all those athletes who will stay at home this weekend, there are three options.
First, there is the 6 mile race (which is actually a 10km race or a 5km fun run) at the Irene Glen Estate on Friday, 3 April. Enquiries: Teresa on 084-455-5490.
The second race of the weekend is the Run for Youth, another 10km race and 5km fun run. This will be presented on Saturday 4 April at Lynnwood Laerskool. Enquiries: Violet on 084-740-1240.
On Monday 6 April the Family Day race will be presented at The Grove Shopping Centre. This event includes a 21km half marathon, a 10km race and a 5km Fun Run.
Soccer
ABSA Premiership will continue this weekend and all three Pretoria’s teams will be in action during the next week.
On Saturday SuperSport United will travel to Pietermaritzburg to play against Maritzburg United at the Harry Gwala stadium. The game starts at 15:00.
On Sunday AmaTuks will fight on to avoid relegation when they travel to Botshabelo and play against Bloem Celtic at the Kaizer Sebothelo stadium. The game also starts at 15:00.
Next Wednesday Mamelodi Sundowns, who are currently second on the log, will try to narrow the gap between them and Kaizer Chiefs when they will take on Black Aces in the Mbombela Stadium. This game will starts at 19:30.
Golf
2015 Masters Tournament will be the 79th edition of this famous tournament and the first of golf’s four major championships for 2015. It starts next Thursday (9 April) and the final day will be on 12 April. The masters will once again be presented at the famous Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia. Several South Africans will be in action at the tournament.
