Sports highlights, 12 to 14 June

The winter weather keeps many sports fans on their couches nowadays and in front of their TVs, but for those willing to take on the cold there are also a few options this weekend.

Although the last round of league matches in the SuperRugby tournament are only of academic interest, especially for South African teams, there are still two very interesting derbies to look forward to.

Rugby

While the schools are currently busy with exams and school rugby’s focus for now shifted to the provincial representatives for a few weeks, rugby lovers will have to be satisfied with the final week of league matches in the SuperRugby tournament as well as the action in Italy, where the Junior World Championships are currently underway.

* On Wednesday night the Junior Springboks played in their third group match against Australia. The outcome of this match determined their opponent on Monday 15 June in the first phase of the playoffs.

* On Saturday two South African derbies take place in the SuperRugby series. At 17:05 the Bulls will play their final home game for 2015 against the Cheetahs and for both these teams only pride will be at stake.

The Stormers already qualified for the play-offs and they will probably rest most of their stars for the match against the Sharks in Durban. This game starts at 19:10.

Athletics

Most athletes who participated in the Comrades Marathon at the end of May have probably recovered already and they are again in search of race opportunities.

* On Saturday the Mamelodi athletics club presents the “Race against Drugs” in Mamelodi. This race has a choice between a 10km road race or a 5km fun-run. Enquiries: Gabriël Makola on 078-169-4643.

* For those who want to get out of bed early on a public holiday, Alpha Centurion presents the Winter Warmer road race on Tuesday, 16 June. The race starts at their clubhouse in Clubview and has three options. The serious runners can go for the 21.1 half marathon. Then there will be a 10km race for less serious runners and a 5km fun run for the rest. Enquiries: Bert van der Raad 082-922-6817.
