Sport highlights, 26-28 June
While South Africans will probably suffer from SuperRugby withdrawal symptoms this weekend, tennis enthusiasts can start looking forward to the Wimbledon tournament, which starts on Monday.
SuperRugby
While South Africans celebrated the 20th anniversary of the first time the Springboks won the Rugby World Cup this week, disappointed rugby lovers will have to watch two teams from New Zealand and two teams from Australia compete in the semi-finals of the SuperRugby series this weekend.
On Saturday morning at 09:35 (SA time) the Hurricanes will take on the Brumbies in the Westpac Stadium, Wellington, New Zealand.
A few hours later, at 11:55 (SA time), the defending champions, the Waratahs, will take the field in the Allianz Stadium, Sydney, Australia, to play against the Highlanders.
Club rugby
The lack of other local rugby action gives Pretoria’s rugby supporters the perfect opportunity to support local club rugby this weekend.
In the Carlton Cup tournament, Police will play against Oostelikes at their new club grounds in Groenkloof (old Pretoria Rugby Club). Tukkies plays against Naka Bulls in the Tuks Rugby Stadium and finally, Centurion and Harlequins will meet at Centurion’s fields. All these games will start at 16:00.
Athletics
Runners who are prepared to brave the cold on Saturday morning can enter the Run-Walk for Bibles half-marathon, which will be presented by Alpha Athletics Club in Centurion. The race includes a 21.1km half-marathon and a 10km run. The race will start and finish at Hoërskool Zwartkops, Centurion. Starting time is 07:30. Enquiries: Bert van den Raad on 082-922-6817.
Tennis
The annual tennis tournament that tennis lovers look forward to the most, Wimbledon, starts on Monday, 29 June. South Africa’s Kevin Anderson is seeded fourteenth in the singles division for men.
