Sport highlights 18 to 20 September
Rugby, soccer and boxing will deliver the most important action for local sports fans this weekend.
South Africans who do not like rugby, will probably suffer over the next six weeks, because we can be assured that this sport will dominate all news until October 31.
Rugby
The eighth Rugby World Cup kicks off this weekend, when the host country, England, play in the opening match of the tournament against Fiji on Friday at 21:00 (SA time).
South Africa’s first match will take place on Saturday, 19 September. The Springboks then play against Japan in Brighton. This game will start at 17:45 (SA time).
Meanwhile the Currie Cup also continues. On Friday (18 September) at 19:00 the Blue Bulls will play at Newlands in Cape Town in a very important and decisive match against WP.
Cricket
While the African Cup T20 tournament is in progress at the moment across the country, as well as in Namibia and Kenya, cricket lovers in Pretoria can also support the Titans Bash at SuperSport Park this weekend.
This unique T20 tournament gives top club players and some schoolboy stars the opportunity to rub shoulders on the field with international and provincial stars. All the matches will be played at SuperSport Park and access for spectators is free. The action starts on Thursday 17 September at 10:00 with the first game between the Phantoms and the Megastars. At 13:30 the Tornados will take on the Pirates. The round robin continues at 10:00 on Friday and Saturday, while the play-off game and the final will be played on Sunday 20 September, also starting at 10:00 and 13:30.
Soccer
Although none of the local teams in the PSL Soccer League will be in action this weekend, all three of them will play in league matches next week.
SuperSport United are first in line when they play Wits in the Bidvest stadium at 19:30 on Tuesday.
On Wednesday Mamelodi Sundowns will be the hosts for Ajax Cape Town in the Lucas Moripe stadium at 19:30. At the same time (19:30), AmaTuks will be up for the challenge to face Kaizer Chiefs in the FNB stadium at Nazrec.
Boxing
The popular South African boxer, Hekkie Budler, faces another challenge at Emperors Palace this weekend. Budler will defend his WBA and IBO minimum weight titles against Simphiwe Khonco. It will be Budler’s first fight against a South African opponent in more than two years since he beat Nkosinathi Joyi in June 2013. It will also be Khonco’s first fight in Gauteng. Khonco, who is fourth on the WBA’s rankings list, is also the inter-continental champion of the IBO.
