Sports highlights, 2-4 October

There is a basket full of rugby, cricket and soccer action to look forward to this weekend, while those who feel like being active can participate in the business challenge relay in Pretoria.

Although the Proteas tour of India started earlier this week, the rugby action at the World Cup in England will continue to attract the most attention.

Rugby

After two turbulent weeks at the World Cup, the Springboks will have to pass a crucial test this weekend if they still want to end first in their group.

Should they beat Scotland on Saturday in Newcastle (17:45 SA time), Heyneke Meyer could start making plans for the quarter-finals.

The Currie Cup tournament is now in the home stretch. Although the Blue Bulls, at first sight, has two easy games remaining, they can easily be surprised on Friday night against the EP Kings if they do not show up for the game.

This is the final home game in the league phase for the Blue Bulls and kick-off will be at 19:00.

Cricket

The Proteas will start their tour in India as usual with a series of three T20 matches. The first of these three ‘flash cricket’ matches takes place on Friday (October 2).

It will be played in the Himachal Pradesh cricket association stadium in Dharmasala and the action will start at 15:30 (SA time).

Athletics

There is of course as usual again being catered for the long-winded to put the sneakers on this weekend.

The business challenge relay, which will be presented by Magnolia Club on 3 October, provides a relaxing and social environment in which organisations can compete outside the strenuous business environment.

The event is open to full-time employees of corporations, government departments, private companies or any other employment organisation where people work together.

Each company may enter an unlimited number of teams and everyone is encouraged to participate.

By entering a team for this event, a company will be promoting health and physical fitness and a sense of pride and achievement in their organisation.

The relay will start and finish at Rietondale park, Soutpansberg Road, Rietondale.

The distance of the course for running teams is a standard 42.2km marathon and for walking teams it will be 21.1km. The route is divided into six legs for running teams and three legs for walking teams. The distance of each leg is +/- 7km.

The race will start at 06:00. Enquiries: 086-046-0906.

Football

On the football front, the Telkom knockout series is currently underway. While SuperSport United has already played on Wednesday against Polokwane City, only one local team will be in action this weekend.

On Saturday night, Mamelodi Sundowns takes on Chippa United in the Lucas Moripe stadium in Mamelodi. This game will start at 20:15.
