South African national sports teams competing abroad performed well at the weekend, but at home Bafana Bafana crashed to defeat.
The first big game of the weekend saw Bafana lose 2-0 to Angola on Saturday afternoon in the African Nations Championship (CHAN) qualifier at the Rand Stadium.
Things, however, cheered up when the Springboks edged past Wales with 23-19 in a quarter final match in the Rugby World Cup at Twickenham.
A last-minute try from captain Fourie Du Preez helped the Boks claim a famous win. Heyneke Meyer’s troops will now gear up to face the All Blacks on Saturday for a place in the final.
The action continued on Sunday when Banyana Banyana defeated Equatorial Guinea 1-0 to qualify for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio.
SA Football Association president Danny Jordaan hailed Banyana after their heroics.
“Today is a historic day for women football; not only have they qualified for the Rio Olympics but have done so in style – winning away from home in ‘hostile’ Bata environment,” Jordaan told SAFA.net.
On the cricket field, the Proteas defeated India by 18 runs thanks to Morne Morkel’s figures of 4/39 and Quinton de Kock’s 103.
Sunday’s win in Rajkot, India, put the Proteas in the driving seat as they have a 2-1 lead over India with only two One Day Internationals to play.
