PSL commemorates Ellis Park disaster
A moment of silence will be observed in all PSL games this coming weekend.
A moment of silence will be observed ahead of Premier Soccer League (PSL) game this weekend, to commemorate the Ellis Park disaster in 43 people died in 2001 in a stampede.
This week, marks the 15th anniversary of SA’s worst football tragedy when the Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs fans died.
The PSL said in a statement on Tuesday, that it would honour those who tragically lost their lives.
“The PSL will observe a moment of silence ahead of the ABSA Premiership and National First Division fixtures in memory of the 43 football fans who lost their lives during the Ellis Park disaster on 11 April 2001.”
“The moment of silence will be observed ahead of the midweek and this coming weekend’s fixtures,” PSL said.
The 24th round of the ABSA Premiership kicks off with table toppers Mamelodi Sundowns looking to maintain their position when they host Jomo Cosmos on Saturday evening, at the Lucas Moripe Stadium.
Downs are aiming for a treble this season and with one trophy already in the cabinet, few people would rule out two more going to Chloorkop.

Amatuks’ 4-2 win over Maritzburg United last weekend, saw them leapfrog Jomo Cosmos to 14th and a win away will take them closer to survival.
Matsatsantsa are eyeing a top eight finish this season and if they can secure three wins in their last six games, they might have a fighting chance.
