Bafana fail to qualify for Afcon

Bafana Bafana have no chance of qualifying for the Africa Cup of Nations, despite their 4-0 win over Gambia on Saturday.

Despite their 4-0 win over Gambia on Saturday, Bafana Bafana failed to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon).

Cameroon’s win over Mauritania made the trip to Gabon impossible for Shakes Mashaba’s men, who now have no chance of finishing as best runner-up.

Thirteen group winners will be guaranteed a spot in next year’s showpiece, plus the two best runners-up and the host nation.

Bafana currently sits on six points with one game to go.

The highest points they could achieve is nine but Liberia, Central African Republic and Burkina Faso, who are second in their respective groups, are already on 10 points which means Bafana cannot overhaul them even if these teams lost their final games.

Bafana have failed to qualify for three Afcon editions since winning the tournament back in 1996.

Bafana became the first host nation to exit in the group stage in the Soccer World Cup in 2010. The hosts needed to beat France four clear goals, and hoped Mexico lost to Uruguay to advance. Bafana won 2-1 and Uruguay edged El tri 1-0.

In the 2014 World Cup qualifiers, Bafana needed the CAR to defeat Ethiopia to qualify but Ethiopia won their game.

Mashaba and his men now have the 2018 Russia World Cup to prepare for.
