Sport highlights, 2-4 September

Bafana Bafana will be the only national sports team in action this weekend while the Springboks have a break and with the international cricket season resuming in October for the Proteas.

The streets of Centurion will be a hive of activity again on Saturday with the biggest road race in the country taking place.

Athletics

Pretorians will experience the biggest road race in the country this weekend. There are only a few days left until the Pretoria leg of the 2016 SPAR Women’s Challenge takes place at SuperSport Park Stadium in Centurion on Saturday. Entries for both the 5km and 10km race are still available at SuperSport Park from 10:00 to 18:00 daily until Friday 2 September. The race will start on Saturday at 14:00.

Cricket

With the early-season test series between the Proteas and the Black Caps from New Zealand something of the past, we have to wait a few weeks for the official cricket season to start. In the meantime, cricket enthusiasts do not have to go without any action. They can still watch the action in the Africa T20 series. Although Northerns will not be in action this weekend, at least there will be games to watch.

Rugby

With the Springboks enjoying a break in the Castle Lager Rugby Championship this weekend, all the attention will be on the action in the Currie Cup tournament. The Blue Bulls are involved in a must-win game against the Lions, the defending champions. The game will start at 19:10 on Friday night at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria.

Tennis

The fourth tennis Grand Slam tournament of the year started this week in the Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York. Tennis lovers will be glued to their TV sets this weekend to follow the progress of their favourite players like the Williams sisters, Angelique Kerber, Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and South Africa’s Kevin Anderson, the 23rd seed in the men’s singles.

Football

The qualifying games for Afcon 2017 resume this weekend and Bafana Bafana will also be in action. They take on Mauritania in the Mbombela Stadium, Nelspruit. This game will take place on Friday night at 19:00.
