Sport Highlights, 9 – 11 September

Summer is here and this weekend there is a lot of action in which Pretorians can participate or follow on TV.

After a week of interruption to the Castle Rugby Championship, Springbok fans can see their team in action again this weekend.

Rugby

The Springboks travelled to Brisbane in Australia this week where they will play the Wallabies at well-known Sun Corp Stadium. This game will kick off at 12:05 (SA time) on Saturday afternoon.

* The Currie Cup competition enters a make-or-break stage this weekend. Fortunately for the Blue Bulls they have a less difficult game ahead. This weekend they face the Pumas in Nelspruit. The game starts at 19:10 on Saturday evening.

* The Gold Cup Club tournament kicks off next weekend with 20 clubs once again competing in a Rugby World Cup-style format consisting of eight pool matches per week for five weeks up until 8 October. The top two from each group will progress to the quarter-finals a week later. All knockout matches, including the televised semi-finals (22 October) and final (29 October) will be hosted at participating clubs. Pretoria Police will travel to Kathu for their first match in the tournament. They play against Sishen at the Sivos Stadium in Kathu. The game starts at 15:30.

Cricket

Cricket lovers will have to wait a few weeks more before they can see the counties best players in action again for the franchises and the Proteas. In the meantime action in the Africa T20 Cup is continuing.

Tennis

Not many big names have fallen so far in the US Open tennis tournament. However, this weekend the champions will be crowned in the singles titles.

Soccer

The Varsity Soccer season is still on and TUT will be in action next week. This local team did well this year and they managed to qualify for the semi-finals. They take on NWU Mafikeng at the TUT stadium on Thursday at 18:00.

Athletics

Road runners in Pretoria have a choice of two different races this weekend. The Value Logistics Addicted to Life half marathon and 10km race takes place at the TUT campus. This event also includes a 5km fun run. The action starts at 06:00. Phone Connie at 071-405-5588 for more info.

The Discovery Jacaranda FM Spring Walk includes 15km and 8km races and a 5km fun run. It is hosted at the Pretoria Botanical Gardens. The event starts at 08:00 on Saturday morning.
