Sport Highlights, 21 December to 6 January

It seems the whole world is on holiday and action on the sports fields is also scarce during the festive season.

Although top sporting events are rare during the festive season, there are nevertheless a few that sports fans can look forward to.

Cricket

Cricket will form a major chunk of the sports lover’s menu during the festive season. Sri Lanka will arrive in South Africa soon for a tour which includes three Tests, five one-dayers and three T20 games. The first Test will start the day after Christmas in Port Elizabeth.

Meanwhile, the domestic T20 Challenge was completed and local franchises have a break until the Sunfoil four-day series resumes on 5 January.

Rugby

For rugby fans, December is a dry time. The next seven’s rugby tournament in the World Series will only take place at the end of January in Wellington, New Zealand. So the rugby fan will have to be content with touch rugby with mates on the beaches of South Africa.

Soccer

South Africa’s soccer stars will also take a break over the festive season and the last soccer action of the year in the Premier League will take place on 21 and 22 December.

SuperSport United will play Polokwane City at the Lucas Moripe Stadium on 21 December at 19:30 while Mamelodi Sundowns will play their last game of the season on 22 December against Baroka FC at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane at 18:00.

Athletics

Road runners also take a holiday and although many of them continue to practise and try to avoid unhealthy food over December, there is little in organised races to participate in otherwise.

For those who want to burn a few calories before Christmas, there is the A4 Aerobics-4-All road safety run/walk in Centurion on 24 December. The event consists of a 21.1km half marathon, a 10km road race and a 5km fun run. The races start and end at the Eco Boulevard centre in Highveld, Centurion. The first two start at 06:30 and the fun run at 06:45.

Those who want to suffer for their eating-sins after Christmas can participate in the Right to Run/Walk 10km run and 5km fun run on 31 December. It is an evening event which starts at 17:00 at Rietondale Park in the Moot.
