Sundowns escape with a draw in Tunisia

Downs braced a hostile crowd in Tunisia to claim a draw against Esperance.

Mamelodi Sundowns secured a 0-0 draw against Esperance in Rades stadium, Tunisia on Wednesday night.

Despite the hostile crowd, the Pretoria side managed to claim a point in the CAF championship encounter.

Both teams started the match at a high tempo, looking for scoring opportunities.

Several chances fell to Downs’ Percy Tau, but he squandered them.

Esperance also pushed forward, but Motjeka Madisha and co-defenders managed to keep the Tunis side at bay.

The home side continued to attack in the second half, but Madisha made crucial interceptions.

Ten minutes into the second half, Tau had a chance to open the scoring but shot straight at the keeper.

The game became intense as several flares went off in the stands, as is the practice in North Africa, but Mosimane and his troops managed to keep their calm.

Although the Pretoria side would have won had Tau buried one of his many chances, the draw was still a good result for Downs given that Esperance won in Pretoria a fortnight ago.

Downs remain third on five points level with St George.

Esperance lead the log with eight points after four games.

Sundowns now face St George in Addis Ababa in two weeks.

Anything less than a win will see their hopes of retaining the CAF Championship squashed.
