Camp creates a love for rugby in townships
The camp aims to improve the standard of rugby in Pretoria townships.
A rugby community service camp was held for over 200 underprivileged Pretoria children on Wednesday.
The event was hosted by St Alban’s college and sponsored by Nashua.
The school’s director of rugby Kennedy Tsimba said the aim of the camp was to improve the standard of rugby in the townships.
Tsimba, a former Blue Bulls player, said the camp prepared the young ones for the Moshate Cup, which takes place on 15 July.
“We are well aware government wants transformation in sports, so having this kind of gathering builds towards that goal,” said Tsimba.
“We have kids from Mamelodi, Eersterust, Soshanguve, Atteridgeville and other surrounding townships hyped for the tournament.”
Tsimba said a love for rugby was growing in townships but more needed to be done to ensure fast-paced growth.
“The love for the game in townships is there but unfortunately there is no structure or financial support.”
“The key is the kids are involved; that they love and enjoy the sport. We all want to see a difference in their lives.”
Tsimba said a rugby festival would be held in celebration of Nelson Mandela day.
He said Blue Bulls and Springboks players had also dedicated their time to the kids.
“The purpose of this festival is to uplift, create activities and memories for children from these disadvantaged communities.”
“We have activities in mind such as face painting, dance competitions, lucky draws, jumping castles, candy floss and refreshments, breakfast and lunch for children.”
