SPORT: Highlands park bus to steal point at Loftus
As expected, Downs had most of the ball position but the stubborn defence of Highlands stood firm.
Mamelodi Sundowns’ ambition of climbing to third int he PSL table was frustrated by Highlands Park at Loftus Versfeld on Wednesday evening.
The Pretoria giants were held to a goalless draw by the plucky newcomers despite controlling the game from start to finish.
Jeremy Brockie, who was yet to find his feet in Downs colours, wasted a glorious opportunity to break the deadlock in the first half.
Controversy struck early in the second when Downs defender Ricardo Nascimento was sent off 51st minute for tugging at Highlands’ midfielder Siphiwe Mahlangu then making rude remarks towards the referee.
Despite being a man down, Downs continued to boss the game creating chances.
One of the chances fell to Wayne Arendse, whose powerful header in the 71st minute was cleared off the line before Lyle Lakay’s freekick forced Highlands keeper Tapuwa Kapini into a diving save in the 87th securing a point for the visitors.
And disappointed Downs coach Pitso Mosimane said the result was two points lost.
“Yes, I’m very much frustrated with the way the game went on,” Mosimane told SuperSport TV.
“My players did whatever they had to do. I’m not encouraging Ricardo to get a red card. I’m the first one who speaks out against it, and that was uncalled for, that’s how it is with my players. The other side, I’m not there to talk about it.”
Sundowns next face Cape Town City in the semifinal of the MTN 8 at the weekend.
