SPORT: English Premier League brings coaching to Pta
The programme will further develop the participating coaches’ experience in areas like running youth tournaments and festivals.
The High-Performance Centre at the University of Pretoria in Hatfied is hosting a “premier” skills coaching course until Sunday.
The course is in a partnership between the English Premier League and the British Council that uses football as a tool to develop a brighter future for young people around the world.
The course – the Phase Two Global Football Coaching and Referee Development programme – started on 26 August, and provides intensive training to 38 grassroots football coaches and 24 referees.
The programme has successfully nurtured three South African coach trainers in recent years and wants to increase this number further.
Nomonde Mashabane, who completed the course in 2015 says: “I have a real passion for women’s football and a programme such as Premier Skills expands the game irrespective of gender, race or ability.”
League head of international relations Kate Hodgkinson says the course has already had a huge impact around the world.
“Here in South Africa where we have run the programme since 2013. Phase Two uses football to teach numeracy, literacy, nutrition and organising tournaments and festivals,” she said.
