Vilakazi teaches Downs a lesson
Sibusiso Vilakazi's lone goal gave Bitvest Wits a 1-0 win over Mamelodi Sundowns at the Bidvest stadium on Tuesday evening.

Mamelodi Sundowns suffered their third defeat of the Absa Premier League season when they lost 1-0 to Bidvest Wits at the Bidvest stadium in Johannesburg on Tuesday evening.
Sibusiso Vilakazi’s 76-minute strike was enough to give the ‘clever boys’ the three points while Pitso Mosimane’s men slip to third on the log standings.
Sundowns went into the match confident after thrashing St Michael by 3-0 in the Confederation of African Football (CAF) champions league preliminary round, while Wits lost by the same scoreline during the weekend to crash out of the some competition.
Wits dominated early proceedings but failed to trouble Sundowns’ keeper Dennis Onyango, as both Papi Fathi and Kees Kwakman had opportunities to score, only to scoop their shots over the bar.
On the other hand, the Brazilians nearly took the lead towards halftime when Cuthbeth Malajila was lead through goal by Teko Modise but Thulani Hlatswayo’s well-timed challenge was enough to force a corner. The two teams went into the halftime tunnel locked on 0-0.
Wits began the second half with intent and a goal from the students looked inevitable as they kept attacking through both flanks of the Downs’ defence. The breakthrough finally came in the 76th minute when Vilakazi showed good skill to dance pass Ramahlwe Mphahlele and beat oncoming Onyango to score his fourth league goal of the season.
Sundowns pushed everything and everyone forward in the last few minutes, their persistence nearly resulting in a goal but somehow Anthony Laffor’s attempt was kept out by the woodwork. The game ended 1-0 in favour of the host who now trail log leaders Kaizer Chiefs by seven points.
Sundowns will now travel to Charles Mopeli stadium in the Free State to play Free State Stars on Saturday night for their league clash.
