For the second consecutive year Tennis enthusiasts in Pretoria can look forward to see the South African Davis Cup tennis team in action at a local club.

Irene Country Club which has hosted two Davis Cup Ties last year; South Africa vs Lithuania and South Africa vs Monaco has been confirmed once again as the venue for the all-important July tie.

Davis Cup ties are as much about ambiance as they are about competition and both the players and the fans will be treated to top-class tennis in a superb environment when South Africa takes on Ireland in the Euro/Africa Zone Group 2 Play-Off Davis Cup tie from 17 to 19 July 2015.

South Africa beat Monaco 3-2 last year January in the first tie ever played in Irene. But then, three months later, South Africa lost narrowly to Lithuania 2-3 at the same venue.

“Irene Country Club has proved last year to be fantastic hosts at their superb venue. Tennis South Africa (TSA) received huge kudos from both visiting teams and our local players as well as the spectators on the choice of venue and it made complete sense to play this Tie at this  outstanding venue,” exclaimed Gavin Crookes, President and acting CEO of TSA.

“The Davis Cup is one of the most prestigious events on the tennis calendar and is vital for the growth of the sport in South Africa. To be able to hold this event in a superb facility of this nature only adds to its stature.”

South Africa and Ireland have played each other twice before (1927 and 1931) with the honours going South Africa’s way on both occasions. However, both previous ties have been staged in Dublin and on grass. This will be the first time the two nations will meet on South African shores. The home side will have to beat the Irish visitors to remain in Euro/Africa Group 2.

Whatever happens on the court, the Irish are sure to relish the hospitality they will receive at Irene Country Club. Situated in the south of Tshwane, the club is perfectly located in Gauteng for spectators from Johannesburg and Pretoria as well as those travelling in from Ekurhuleni and Mogale City.

South Africa and Ireland are expected to name their sides for the tie only 10 days before the tie in accordance to the Davis Cup rules.

The tie will be played on a medium to fast paced hard court with seats for 500 spectators. Tickets will be available from 24 June.
