Sport Highlights: 31 July to 2 August
Except for a few games at club level, there is no rugby to look forward to this weekend, because the Bulls’ game in Japan will not be broadcast in South Africa, but sport enthusiasts can still look forward to watching lots of sport action on TV or to even participate in some action, like road running.
With the rugby season taking a breather this weekend at provincial and international level, there are many other options for sports fans to look forward to.
Cricket
With the first test between South Africa and Bangladesh that ended in a draw, this means the second and final test, which started on Thursday, July 30, will be crucial. South Africa will have to win this one to give their fans something to smile about, especially after their poor performance in the T20s and ODIs. The second test is scheduled to last until Monday, August 3.
Tennis
Tennis enthusiasts of Pretoria can this weekend look forward to top international junior tennis action at the Gauteng North Junior ITF tournament. The tournament ends on Sunday, 2 August at the Groenkloof Tennis Stadium. The top players will be in action this weekend in the semi-final rounds and the finals.
Wrestling
The Johnnie Reitz Big 5 wrestling tournament each year attracts some of the country’s best wrestlers of all ages. This year should be no exception. The tournament will be presented on Saturday, August 1, in the Gauteng North wrestling hall in 26th street, Menlo Park. The action starts at 11:00.
Athletics
The Tshwane half-marathon and 10km race will be presented again on Saturday 1 Augustus at the Medunsa campus in Ga Rankuwa. This is a flat race with only a couple of gradual hills towards the 18km mark.
The race supports local community development and part of it is run through the Ga-Rankuwa Township. Starting times: 21.1km and 10km: 07:00; 5km Fun Run: 07:15. Walkers and wheelchair users are welcome.
Enquiries: Dukes Mokonoto on 082-412-5673.
