Sport Highlights, 9 – 12 October
Although the Springboks will not be in action this weekend, there is still a lot of national and international action in different sports to look forward to.
With the Springboks’ final group match against America at the rugby World Cup completed on Wednesday, South Africans will this weekend be able to be more relaxed when they follow the Proteas cricket action in India.
Rugby
After the shocking start against Japan, the Springboks could eventually succeed in ending on the top of the log in their group at the World Cup when they beat America on Wednesday. Their focus is now on moving to next weekend, when they will play in the quarter final against Australia or Wales. South Africans will this Saturday be anxiously watching the match between these two nations to see who will be their opponent on 17 October.
The game between Australia and Wales starts at 17:45 on Saturday.
The Currie Cup competition’s last round league matches will also be played this weekend. The Blue Bulls play against the Pumas on Friday in Nelspruit. Lappies Labuschagne and his team only have to win this game to qualify for a home semi-final on 17 October. Friday’s match between the Pumas and the Blue Bulls starts at 18:00.
Cricket
The Proteas won the Twenty20 series against India and the Indians will want to take revenge in the one-day tests (ODI’s). The first ODI game will be played on Sunday, 11 October at Green Park in Kanpur. The action starts at 05:30 (SA time).
Meanwhile, the local provincial Momentum One-day series (50 overs) also starts this weekend in South Africa. Cricket lovers in Pretoria can see their team (Titans) in action on Friday, when they take on the Warriors at SuperSport Park. The action starts at 14:00.
Athletics
The Chamberlain Capital Classic road race, which gives participants an option of a half-marathon (21,1km), a 10km road race and a 5km fun run, will be presented this Saturday, 10 October.
The half-marathon and 10km race starts at 06:00 and the fun run will start at 06:15. The race starts at the Phobians Club in Queens Crescent, Lynnwood, in the east of Pretoria. Enquiries: 082-922-6817.
Netball
The two old archenemies, Tuks and Maties, will on Monday, 12 October compete in the semi-finals of the Varsity netball series. The game takes place at the Rembrandt hall in the Tuks Sports Complex. The action starts at 18:00.
